Sandy Dog sighed as Cecily Dog checkmated him. “When did you learn to play chess so well, sister?” He asked.
“Well,” Cecily paused, “I am only an amateur at this, but you are new to it comparatively. It takes some practice to get good.” A knock suddenly resounded throughout their abode. “Mother or Father will get it, remember the rule.” He stopped as she said this and came back to the table, glaring at her as she smiled at Father. Turning back to the chess board, they heard the front door open. “Your Highness!” Father bowed low before the prince, the rest of the family following soon after. “Edward!” The prince told Father, “Just what did I tell you? Please, just do, not honoring! My position in life is very unstable at this moment, and I really need fighters. Could you and your son fight and recruit others on the way?” “Sandy? Yes, he is as proficient as me, but recruit others? That is like trying to get a mouse to volunteer to let a cat eat him. No one around here is like that, except for our neighbors about a mile or two behind us.” “If you say so. You and Sandy, go get ready to fight. We have teamed with the voles and other small creatures to fight the birds and wolves – our own kind has turned against us some, even.” So, Sandy and Edward got ready to fight. Sandy, always the clever one, ran into Edward’s room, popped open the closet, and grabbed the Lava Sword, awed and its age and durability. He then ran into his room for his special bow and arrow set, where the arrows are made with the special metal Palladium, which will cause them to be nearly friction-less. The bow is made so that you can put less force on the bow to make it go farther. Of course, there is the armor for both of them, which is not very special, but they each carry a certain skin that holds precious amounts of the again rare True Blue, or Firstflower. A couple drops at most will heal in minutes. Stuffing all of this into his flying contraption, Sandy walked back to the main room, handing the sword to Edward before the reached the prince. Upon reaching the main room, everyone exchanged goodbyes. “I will see you later, Cecily,” Sandy said to his sister, “have some fun with our chore-ing mother.” “See you later, too,” Cecily replied, “Have a killer time.” The last goodbye done, the trio of Edward, Sandy, and the prince quickly left. Sandy looked around the car to see humans chasing them. “Driver, speed up! Humans are chasing us!” “Son,” Edward paused, “call me Edward from now on, okay?” “Yes sir,” Sandy grinned mischievously. “Something else – do you know of the mist?” “Yes. The humans cannot see this car, so we are unknown to them a technologically advanced – they think we are running. What is it, though, how is it, well, it?” “It is, well, mist is a…” Edward’s eyes clouded, as if he was dreaming. “The mist is a separation between our kinds – between us and humans. This occurred when the first human couple sinned against God. It began in the beginning. Let me tell you the story, as I remember it.” “Order, all beasts here, have order!” The room quieted as King Smalden ordered, and he continued. “Prince Milton is coming with several dogs he believes will be of great help, and the father-son duo is really fluent in all kinds of weaponry. Heyward, if you would please look at their weapons to see if they have something we do not have. Also, they would probably enjoy learning about new weapons.” “Yes, your Majesty, I will do such,” Heyward the rabbit tinkerer bowed. “Now, quit that nonsense, you stubborn rabbit! So everyone, I wanted to inform you about that before we go on to the plans. Any questions?” “What are their names?” The questioner, a small timid rabbit, smiled at the King. “They are simply Edward and Sandy Dog, father and son respectively. Any more questions?” Time fleeting, he continued, as no one answered. “Okay, we need to plan for the attack. In the middle of this forest, there are two direct roads inside, and those would, of course, need a good size force guarding them. But we need a whole wall guard to warn us when they try to attack the walls themselves. This I will leave all up to our captain of the guard, who is going to be Edward.” A loud racket ensued at this point. “A dog is going to be leading us? How do you have the ability to trust him, anyhow?” “He is vouched for by Dog King Clarence,” Smalden replied to the burly, outraged questioner. “I will also have dogs working on guard with us. Teach them as you guard, and do not act as their better. I will personally deal with that, ahem, individual or group. I will also have him talk about forest scouts with us as soon as he can. You are all dismissed, unless you need to ask questions.” No questions came, and the meeting ended. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth over a 7 day period. On the first day, God created light, and light spread throughout the previous void, a small gap filled by the sun. On the second day, God separated the sky and the oceans of the earth, calling them their respective names. On the third day, God placed land in the middle of the ocean’s waters, preparing for many living organisms to live on it. On the fourth day, God created day and night, to create time, seasons, days, and years, governed by the sun and moon, accompanied by the stars. On the fifth day, God gave all of the water creatures and birds life, the sixth day following with all of the land creatures, including humans, which were made in his image. To the humans he gave dominion over all of us, but in the garden of Eden, Eve, as the woman was called, at from a tree forbidden by God, and then shared it with her husband, Adam. He rested the following day.” (This is a re-worded version of the Creation story from the Bible.) “So, that is how all of us animals are hidden? That is the mist’s origin?” “Yes, Sandy, that is the truth.” “This is why the rabbits have their huge Citadels and First Warren! Are we going to one, too?” “Yes, we are going to First Warren, where Rabbit King Smalden Joveson lives. Dog King Clarence Barker is staying there as well,” the driver informed the passengers, “and excuse me, I am Heyward Cove, a helper of the Prince.” Heyward looked at Prince Milton, smiling. “He does not care for me much, but King Smalden ordered it.” “What do you mean, I like you just fine,” Milton growled. “I was kidding, but yes, he did order it. Anyway, this is hundreds of years old since the last rebuilding, since the war. The cats are coming sometime too, they say, but I doubt it. They have never been in a war as these rabbits have – of course, we dogs have not either.” “So,” Sandy asked, “this is where the story of King Smalden mostly occurred, in what we call the story of The Green Ember*?” “Yes,” Heyward smiled, “and this is where you will meet the famed rabbit Heyward, my namesake, the mischievous contraption builder. He probably is somewhere in the design of your flying contraption, even, and in catapults, and… well, you get the point. He is the royal person for this type of war gear.” Oh… so he is still alive due to the Firstflower?” “Yes, many of them are, but others have not survived, even with it. It is sad, really, but it cannot be helped.” “But it saved these rabbits from fully dying off, so to speak,” Edward finished. “Exactly. The war wounded most beyond help, unless Firstflower was used, that is.” The driver nodded to the guards at the gates of First Warren, and they entered the large fortress. COMMENT YOUR ADDITIONS!
